Kiyomizu
Founded in 807 AD, Kiyomizu is one of Kyoto's most famous temples. The compound stands on Higashiyama Hill and features a broad wooden veranda which juts out over a wooded canyon. Supported by 139 wooden pillars 15 metres high, the Main Hall gives a panoramic view of Kyoto and of woods around the temple, and is the source of the Japanese proverb, "Jumping from Kiyomizu Veranda" which means to take a determined step. The shrine is dedicated to Juichi-men, the 11 headed Kannon (Goddess of Mercy).
